The Greater Bridgeport St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee announced the winners of the 2020 Mr. and Miss Shamrock Scholarship Program. They were selected among many applicants by a panel of judges of local educators. All winners are Fairfield residents, according to scholarship program organizer Colleen Sargent Murphy.
Miss Shamrock 2020 is Mary Feeney, a senior at Academy of Lady of Mercy, Lauralton Hall in Milford and the daughter of Caroline and James Feeney. Mr. Shamrock 2020 is Seamus Carolan, a senior at Fairfield College Preparatory School and son of Jim and Jen Carolan.
Miss Shamrock Mary Feeney has been Irish step dancing in the annual parade since she was seven years old with the Sheeaun Academy of Irish Dance. She is a camp counselor at the St. Patrick’s Gaelic Football Cul, a summer program teaching Irish football, which is like rugby, and hurling. She is a member of the Lauralton Hall Irish Club, captain of the cross country team and member of National Honor Society.
Mr. Shamrock Seamus Carolan has been to every parade since he was born as both of his grandfathers served as Grand Marshals. Seamus plays both Gaelic football and hurling and is a member of the Prep hockey and lacrosse teams. He is president of the Irish Cultural Club at Prep raising funds for needy children in Africa and volunteers for the Cardinal Shehan Center and Urban Impact in Bridgeport.
Miss Shamrock Runner Up is Bridget Keary of Lauralton Hall. She is the daughter of Amy and James Keary. Mr. Shamrock Runner-Up is Jack Clyne, a senior at Regis High School, a Jesuit school in Manhattan. He is the son of Annie and Joe Clyne.
The Mr. & Miss Shamrock Scholarship Contest is held annually at the Gaelic American Club, Fairfield. All high school seniors of Irish descent in the greater Bridgeport area are encouraged to submit an application to the Parade Committee. All candidates are interviewed by an independent panel of judges and winners are chosen based upon their knowledge of their Irish heritage, traditions, history, the meaning of St. Patrick’s Day, their involvement in their community, their interests and activities.
The winners receive a monetary scholarship award of $4,000 for future educational endeavors. Runners-up are awarded $2,000 and all will participate in all the events with Mr. and Miss Shamrock throughout the year. The winners will be introduced by the 2020 Grand Marshal Mary Ann Doonan at the Grand Marshal’s Ball on January 24, 2020 at Vazzano’s Four Seasons of Stratford.
Mr. & Miss Shamrock will participate in the Greater Bridgeport St. Patrick’s Day Parade festivities including riding on the float during the parade in downtown Bridgeport on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. For more information visit, http://stpatricksdaybridgeport.com/

Mr. & Miss Shamrock will be an important part of the Greater Bridgeport St. Patrick’s Day Parade Celebration and will be requested to attend events throughout the year. The highlight of course is participating in all the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, including riding on the float during the parade in downtown Bridgeport.
High School Seniors with an Irish background may apply for a $4,000 scholarship (Runner-ups will received $2,000) beginning November 1, 2018. Applications will be in the Guidance Offices of local Public and Catholic High Schools.
The actual judging will be held at a time and date to be determined.
